Music event: I went to Reina & The Blue Valentines' in-store release event at Disk Union dues in Shinjuku. Their new album "Once in a blue moon" had just been released that day (I had got mine the day before when it hit the shelves). They played a nice set including several of my favorites from the new album, accompanied by bassist Nagaike Joe (Scoobie Do) and pianist/composer Ygal. That was a good show in a tiny-sized venue! Was it a coincidence that release day happened to be a full moon?!

Encore: Romantic konya

Weekly revue: 2016 week #28 (July 9 to 15)
Food: - Indian-style izakaya Yaruki, Nakano
Music event: On Thursday, I went to see Kaji Hideki's in-store event at Tower Records Shinjuku, in promotion for latest album "The Blue Boy" released in May. The album is great! The event featured Kaseki Cider, who often contributes a few lyrics to Kaji-kun's albums. He was there to talk between the songs, and he also sang in duet on "shakunetsu shōjo" (from previous album "Ice Cream Man". A one-man live will be held on August 4 at Shibuya Quattro, part of a tour celebrating the 20th anniversary since his solo debut!
Set list: Hero wa kimi to boku / Melody / 5ji no Shibuya de / shakunetsu shōjo feat. Kaseki Cider
Exhibition: I dropped by HMV & Books's small gallery on the last day of an exhibition by Yoshioka Rina. The jacket of The Scooters' latest single "Make Her Mine" is one of her works that was selected by Shindō Mitsuo. Many of her paintings are inspired from movies, though other look like food (lots of curry!) ads. They all have a Showa kind of style, often with an erotic theme. I bought a small zine titled "Eat it" of food-themed works.
Music release news: Negicco, YeYe, Fujin Club, Nosa Reina
Playlist: Breakbot, Halfby, etc.

Music event: This year again I went to the "oshare bon-odori" event presented by fashion designer Keita Maruyama on the rooftop of department store Isetan! Like last year, Nomiya Maki performed live, and this time she was accompanied by Yokoyama Ken (Crazy Ken Band)! Maki sang ondō versions of P5 songs "Tokyo wa yoru no 7ji" and "Sweet Soul Revue" (both were released on iTunes Japan a few days before), and also two new duets with Yokoyama Ken: "otoko to onna" (cover of "Un homme et une femme" to be included on Maki's new album coming out on August 31) and "T-jirō" (from Ken's next album to be released on August 3). The ondō versions were sung a bunch of times, maybe 4 times each, while the audience danced along the specially choreographed moves. The special cocktail was "Suica Soul Revue" (suica = watermelon), I had two. :) This fun event is the perfect cue for summer!

Music event: - I went to see a DJ & talk event featuring Konishi Yasuharu! The event is part of the "JIA Talk" series, and was held at Kinchikuka Kaikan (Architect's House) in Gaienmae. The series started in 1976, and most often features non-architects to talk about what they do. Konishi-san presented music that influenced him since his childhood, chronogically! There was a time limit of two hours, and he could only share about half of what he had selected, still that was a wonderful and unique opportunity. I really wish there will be a 2nd part!
Music release news: Nomiya Maki, Perfume, Hoshino Michiru
Playlist: hitomitoi, Nakatsuka Takeshi, Bank, Towa Tei, Vanilla Beans, Philip Glass
This week's video: Watch Nomiya Maki & Yokoyama Ken (Crazy Ken Band) live from last night! Only archived for one week so hurry. :)
You need to skip to around 3:00.
