Technology Ich hasse iCh

iChannelThe iChannel option that I was forced to join when buying my new mobile phone was sucking out all the battery juice. The problem was with the "telop" (marquee) feature that keeps news scrolling on the wait screen, it prevented the screen from ever going off (screen saver), and since the SO902i has no "closed" state, the screen probably just stayed on in low-power mode scrolling horoscope and weather non-stop.
Actually it's probably a Sony bug that the phone doesn't simply ignore the marquee and go to screen saver mode anyway.

So for now I turned that telop feature off in the wait screen settings. I hope this will let the phone keep its charge for more than half a day.

Another thing that annoys me about iChannel is that the "My Select" shortcut button has been hidden under the "iChannel" button (I have to hold that button about 2 seconds to get to my select, which I use all the time).

Did you use the iChannel marquee thing too?

Otherwise maybe I was given a faulty (or used) battery pack? I charged it yesterday evening and today by noon it was dead, damn! If this persists I'll go back to the shop.

Hi Patrick,

are you sure that you phone is not crippled by your provider?!? I once had Vodaphone in Germany and the mobile I got (Sharp GX30) was practical unusable because it always tried to connect to some high price service they offer. They changed every original option to some Vadophone paid option - and there was no "Do you want to connect to..." before. You select some harmless entry in some sub menu and it started to connect without any further notice. What you describe sounds like you have some similar problem.

I found option in it which might disable that - but these options did not write to memory. The original phone had the options to ask before connect - but Vodaphone disabled to set these options to the state you want them. They even did not do the complete job and removed the options at all - they just had fun making a clown out of me. I was trying to set the option again and again without result. I think they are still laughing at me for being so silly to think that I might be able to make that piece of s... usable for my needs. I really hated that (Ich hasse ... is btw. perfect German).
I had to load that mobile every second day - while I nearly made calls with it - I was so pissed off by it....

For me new mobile I choose wisely and I got some Sony K750i, nearly no SIM lock cripple stuff and I have to load perhaps once a week.

Try to give your new mobile contract back if possible and pay something more for something usefull...

iChannel is some kind of crippled thing as you describe that can use up a lot of packets by requesting the latest news from their server, but it's set by default to only do a few times a day (low traffic).
I think that what was really killing my battery was the marquee on the top screen that kept moving non-stop. Or maybe it was also because I was only on my 2nd charge (maybe batteries can act funny at first).
Anyway I'll see if it holds through the day today!

Haha, thanks to Babelfish. :)

First time I see something translated well by it :-)

At least Babelfish can handle a 3-word sentence. :)

Just want to correct something I said. After checking, it seems that iChannel's refreshes are included in the price of ¥150+tx/month, so it's really not crippled. :) (Except for that screen saver bug that sucked out my battery.)

Hi Patrick, when I was using the 902i I used iChannel as well and never had it drain my battery. I think there should be a setting somewhere to sleep the screen or stop iCH from periodic updates..I don't remember though.

Oh well, today so far it's doing fine, and I'm not putting the marquee back on. :)

Hi,

good to hear that you NOT have a crippled device like me. After 2 years Vodaphone called me and ask to extend my contract: Guess what the answer was... Never ever and a promise to tell everybody what happened to me.
