Music Le bâton musical

Well, the "musical baton" is all over the place, and I've now got it twice (from Ted and マイミク muito), so I'll now get done with it!

  1. Total volume of music files on my computer

    11,255 MP3s (and counting)
    42 GB (too much!)
    400+ albums?
I rip all of what I buy to put on my iPod, and rarely delete anything unless disk space gets too tight, which will probably be very soon.

  2. Song playing right now

Saint Etienne "Teenage Winter" from their latest album "Tales from Turnpike House".

  3. (When I started writing this bâton a few days ago anyway...)

  4. The last CD I bought

  5. Five songs I listen to a lot, or that mean a lot to me

I'm mostly an album listener, as I like to listen to full albums from beginning to end. While maybe I'd be more comfortable (though not less indecisive) with selecting "five albums", here are some individual songs that I'll sometimes add to my "on-the-go playlist" in-between album listens.

Beep! Beep!」
Higuchi Yasuo "Beep! Beep! Beep!" (feat. Young 101+Singers Three)

HIGUCHI Yasuo "Music For Atom AgeGreat song with 70's anime theme-like choirs, from the Astro Boy concept/tribute album "Music For Atom Age" Buy at Amazon.co.jp ranging from pop to classical music. I love the lyrics of this song, which talk about running left and right to spread a good news, though exactly what the good news is kept a secret.
This song is produced by Gary Ashiya of ヒゲの未亡人 (La veuve moustachue, with Kishino You-ichi), whose work with Nagisa Yōko I also love.
So sweet so sweet Far away
      Beep! Beep! Beep!
      Pico "ano toki"

Pico "ano toki"More Pico (= Higuchi Yasuo) but I can't help it. While really anything from his 1972 album "ABC Pico First" Buy at Amazon.co.jp is fantastic, this opening song also has happy lyrics, or at least sort of.
Wada Akiko "kokoro ni hi o tsukete"

WADA Akiko "kokoro ni hi o tsukete"Great 1972 R&B track with disco-ish strings I first heard recently on the Konishi Yasuharu-compiled "Free Soul Wada Akiko" Buy at Amazon.co.jp. That compilation of groovy old recordings of hers is a source of several of my karaoke regulars, though this song is always missing.
    • DJ 440 "Let's Play Bongo!"
DJ 440 "DJ 440This A-side of the vinyl-only "DJ 440's Incredible Mambo Band" release from Readymade International consists of bongo instructions for beginners sampled from an old record and carefully layed over club beats. Since released at the end of 2003, I just can't get enough of it. By pure obsession, I recently hunted down and bought the LP this is based on.
Hear the happy sound of those bongo drums!
If you can tap your toes or clap your hands, you too can play the bongo!
Denki Groove × Scha Dara Parr "Saint ojisan"

Denki Groove × Scha Dara Parr "sei☆ojisan"Last is the song of the week, the latest DG×SDP single: "Saint ojisan" Buy at Amazon.co.jp. A disco-ish rap tune giving some kind of a wink to Ghostbusters ("dare o yobu? Saint ojisan!" ("Who you gonna call? ...")). The album Buy at Amazon.co.jp will be out next week and I can't wait!
  6. Five Three people to whom I'm passing le bâton

These must all have got le bâton a dozen times and be sick of it, and I sure won't blame them if they skip it. Yet this is my attempt to pass it to someone who may have more GBs of music than I do! So far, at least atnb-san surpasses me of a whole 5GB!

Have you? Couldn't find them.

I find burning DVDs of MP3s quite convenient. Neither the drives nor media are very expensive. You can use some sort of file cataloging database program to search them. If you burn them right and you can get your DVD player to read 'em too

nick,
(who'll never be trendy so he has no qualms about dropping any batons that his way.)

Can some stand-alone DVD players play MP3s?

Btw, I usually hate and ignore these chain mail-type things (recently getting a dreadful revival on blogs...) but I had to give in for this one since at least the topic was right.

Letting you know by email.

most standalone DVD players can play ISO CD-Rs with mp3 files on them.

Most seem to be able to play UDF (standard data format) DVDs full of MP3s too though you'd want to test compatibility. Even my cheap player from 5 years ago could play CD-Rs full of MP3 files though it only saw files in the root directory. My newer super cheap region free player sees directories, though of course you have to turn your TV on to easily navigate into them. Also some semi-compatible compression schemes wouldn't play.

In general I find it a great problem solver. The media and DVD+-R drives are cheaper than hard disk (though I got a rebated 60gig US$20 drive the other week) so I can upload tracks one at a time or in bulk to my ipod or computer drive or just pop the same disc in my dvd/CD player

Unfortunately my PC drive is DVD+R only, and my stand-along player seems to only read DVD-R, a very bad match (though I don't use it much for video stuff so I don't care so much), so I can't quite test that out. I regret not getting a writer that does both formats...

thanks a lot patrick!

Back to DVDs - there are very few stand-alone players that just do DVD-R and not +R also/ You might just have one of them but I'd guess it's just as likely you aren't writing something to the right specs... I guess it's easy enough to check out if you visit a friend or something. Certainly one can be wary of computer apps that you can do the drag and drop burning thing with. That sort of app usually uses some sort of packet-writing... anyway a new DVD+/- computer drive won't break your bankbook anymore. Umm I don't want to think of how many gigs of mp3s I have ... except relief that most of it is not actually *on* my computer.

Posted by ndkent on June 28, 2005 at 14:36

I once tried to copy a functioning DVD-R to a DVD+R (my drive can actually read both formats but only write DVD+R) and the resulting DVD+R with the same data isn't recognized by my stand-alone player, leaving me with the only logical explanation that my player doesn't like DVD+R.

I know drives are pretty cheap (so were they when I bought this one), but it's really not a priority as long as I don't feel like starting to burn video.

Oh and I only counted my MP3s on my hard disk, not the rest. :)
