Sayonara CCCD!
It seems like the MP3-loving consumer won the war.
Sony and Avex, the two main large companies releasing copy protected CDs in Japan, have both decided to stop the Red Book tempering. Avex clearly says that it has to do with the popularity of the iPod and similar devices.
Avex' new tactic to keep sales high will be to sell hybrid CD/SuperAudio CD (offering superior audio quality to those with a SACD player), and hybrid DVD audio/video (offering 5.1 audio plus bonus video), in effect from September.
Sony simply goes back to the good old compact disk that we love, fully in effect from November 17.
Hopefully all the others worldwide (not too sure what's happening in other countries) will follow their steps.
From now on may all CDs be rippable for our listening pleasure. Thank you for the music.

Yeah, read the same thing today. Good news indeed. It means that I can start buying non-indie CDs again (the copy protection not only prevented ripping, but also couldn't be played on Macs).

Even if they could be played on a PC, the experience really sucked, sometimes having no choice but to use the provided crappy and skippy player.
I'm glad it's over.

does this mean they're going to fix my broken cdr-dvd drive?

hopefully we'll see this spred to other parts of the world, but the cynic in me sees it as unlikely. :(

I like the idea that Avex is planning SACDs. I hope to see many of these soon!

Actually the other day I noticed for the first time a growing SACD section in a record store, so maybe they're on their way slowly but surely.
You're one of the pioneer users already enjoying the new format. :)

The sound of a good SACD is really a difference, especially if in a 5.1 mix. Dolby Digital 5.1 is good, DTS a bit better but SACD is perfect. You should never make the mistake to listen to a SACD first and hear a standard CD after that. You get the impression your speakers are broken. Better start with a good CD and then later listen to the SACD. It's the same procedure as tasting wine. I hope TokyoRecohan will stock SACDs soon ;-)
