Japan Earthquake

Whoa, we just had an earthquake. It seemed pretty strong here on the 4th floor.

It seems like it was of magnitude 3 on the Japanese scale (approximately 4.3 on the Richter scale, or 4 on the Mercalli scale [ref #1] [ref #2]).

This is the description of a magnitude 4 earthquake on the Mercalli scale:

"Dishes rattle; standing cars rock; trees shake. Most people indoors feel movement. Hanging objects swing. Dishes, windows, and doors rattle. The earthquake feels like a heavy truck hitting the walls. A few people outdoors may feel movement. Parked cars rock."

Update 18:38
Seems like it was a 4 on Japanese scale (and 5 on Richter scale), in Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa.

earthquakes are scary. you never know when they'll stop. or how bad they'll get. at least you don't live very high up. living on the 24th floor of a building must be terrifying during an earthquake.

Do you live on a 24th floor? Must be scary indeed!

I live on the 3rd floor and work on a 4th floor (in Japan 1st floor = ground floor).

no, but a few years ago i was chatting with someone who was on the 24th floor while i was on the second during an earthquake. they were freaking out, my roomate on the third floor didn't even feel it!

i think the ground floor is the dangerous place to be, especially if the building decides to collapse.
