Blog - It's visa renewal time

Japan It's visa renewal time

Today I went to the Tokyo Immigration Bureau to apply for the renewal of my visa. It went pretty well, pretty much along the same lines as 3 years ago. I was there first thing in the morning at 9:00, my number was 76, and I was out in about an hour.

I first went to the application place on the 2nd floor and got my numbered ticket. I figured out that I needed some forms to fill out, and I was sent to the 1st floor to get them. It seems that a lot of people arrive there with their forms already filled. Either they get them somewhere else, or they also came the day before.
I need to remember next time to look-up in advance my company's capital, yearly sales and number of employees, to avoid having to call around while filling the forms, and also my own college graduation date and employment history.

There was a small surprise as the person asked me for a document I didn't have (and I don't even know what it was she was asking for) but then she said it's ok...! I sure hope it is. :)

Now begins the impatient wait for the postcard that will hold no more information than a "we're done". I should hopefully get it in about a week.

You're probably eligible for a permanent residency.

Am I? But it must be a pain to get it, no?

Are you permanent?

Yes I got my PR about one and a half years ago. It's not as hard as you would think. If you're married it's a lot easier.

Maybe I'll try to look into that next time then!

2 months ago, I renewed my visa for 5 years. Last (and first) time it was for 1 year only. Yeah, I've just been around for a year or so.

It was really easy for me since my boss was kind enough to get me a notary or whatever you call a 行政書士 in English.

I can picture at some point I'll have to do it for myself for the first time, and I can tell that will be a pain.

I wish I'd get a 5 year visa. I have an Engineer visa, what type is yours?

And yeah that's nice of your boss! Does that mean you don't even have to go to the immigration office?

You can download those forms online - I did it and it saved a lot of time. But it makes sense to call and check you have the correct documents - I did that twice and received different answers on each occasion...

Good to know of that option, thanks!
To me it still sounds easier to simply go, get the right forms and fill the forms there.

It's been 2 weeks since I applied now, I'm getting a bit worried cause last time it only took a week to get the postcard back.

Here is the link - sorry for not posting it earlier. It is incredibly well hidden on that site, and there is no link from the Mofa visa information page in English - but that's Japanese bureaucracy for you.

Try to get an extension maybe? It's better to ask immigration than here.

Hi all. My work visa (specialist in humanities) expires August 30th. If i don't get a job between now (Aug' 4th) and then, does anyone know of any options; other than leaving the country and returning on a tourist visa?
Thanks
Andy.
